Criterion, Janus

In case it rings your bell (it does mine, after all), Criterion is offering a small but fantastic set of films for online viewing at a five dollar cost. Included on top of the Tarkovsky and the Fellini (the popular ones among the equal but lesser known incredibles) are two Agnès Varda films.

She and Susan Sontag in the Very Seventies below. You can just feel Sontag breathing heavily on the set. And has anyone ever lit a cigarette in quite the same way? No wonder she was notorious for groupies; if you didn't go in for the intellectual intimdation, there was still something for everyone.

Wouldn't it be fun to make a working definition of The Grotesque based off this conversation? And Mr. Kroll will not be known for putting the moderate in his moderation.
