Lam Qua

Woman with Diseased Breast

Year: 1838
Case Number: 5583
Modern Diagnosis: Giant Fibro-Adenoma of the Breast

The patient made a full recovery.

Lam Qua
painted a series of medical portraits for nearly twenty years (1836-1855). The subjects were pre-operative patients with visible tumors and other extreme deformities. All of them were under the care of the physician Peter Parker, a medical missionary, who commissioned Lam Qua to document their defects. Lam Qua was the first painter in China to study Western-style portraiture, with the first English painter to settle there, George Chinnery.
